Haute42 HautePad C-AT

Split-layout leverless controller with 3-level stroke adjustment

Features

  • 3-Level Stroke Adjustment

Use the included tool to adjust the button stroke to one of 3 levels.
The actuation point and stroke can be adjusted to short(0.3mm/1.9mm), Medium(0.6mm/2.2mm), and Long(1.0mm/2.6mm).

  • 18-Button Split Layout

Following the C-16S, this model adopts a split layout. It lets you spread your hands farther apart and adds more buttons that you can operate with your thumbs.

  • Magnetic Top Plate Makes Artwork Easy to Swap

The top plate attaches magnetically. Preset art sheets are included, so you can quickly switch to a design you like. A plain white sheet is also included, allowing you to create your own design.

  • Tournament Lock & PS5 Expansion Support

Equipped with a tournament lock function that disables the function buttons. Connect an adapter such as “Booter 5” to the USB-A port on the right side to use it with PS5.

Installed Key Switches

Main Buttons: Kailh Wind Engine
  • Linear type
  • Actuation force: 40〜50gf
  • Actuation point: 1.2mm
  • Stroke: 2.8±0.25mm
Function Buttons: Kailh Hide Mountain
  • Clicky type
  • Actuation force: 50±10gf
  • Actuation point: 1.2±0.3mm
  • Stroke: 2.8±0.25mm

What Kind of Controller Is the C-AT?

  • 3-level stroke adjustment lets you optimize it for your play style
  • The 18-button split layout allows for a more spacious hand position
  • The magnetic top plate makes artwork easy to swap and offers extensive customization
  • Packed with features such as an OLED screen, RGB LED, and tournament lock
  • Includes a wide range of accessories, including various art sheets
  • The Short (0.3mm) setting may cause unintended inputs due to variations between switches. Medium (0.6mm) is recommended
  • The split layout could be better refined in the vertical positioning of the left and right sides and in the placement of the thumb buttons
  • A separate adapter such as Booter 5 is required to play on PS5
  • At approximately 1700g, it is somewhat heavy and not well suited to carrying around

Hands-On Review

Stroke adjustment is appealing, but the layout needs refinement

The C-AT’s biggest appeal is its 3-level stroke adjustment. However, the 0.3mm Short setting seems a little too aggressive. The installed Wind Engine switches have an actuation point of 1.2±0.3mm, a wide tolerance range, so some units may register a continuous press with the 0.3mm setting. When I tried the unit I had, it did not register a continuous press, but it did produce unintended inputs on buttons I was not touching. For practical use, Medium (0.6mm) is the safer choice.

The main-button Wind Engine switches stand out for their smooth feel and quiet operation. The PBT keycaps also feel good, providing a consistent feel under your fingers.

Swapping artwork using the magnetic top plate is very easy, and the included preset art sheets are a welcome touch. It is also well equipped with features such as an OLED screen and tournament lock.

On the other hand, the split layout carried over from the C16-S still has some issues. The design simply separates the left and right sides of a standard layout. The vertical positions of the left and right action buttons do not line up, while the lower thumb buttons are placed at the same height on both sides. These details highlight the layout’s lack of refinement.

The concept of stroke adjustment itself is very appealing, but considering the practicality of the Short setting and the overall refinement of the split layout, this model still feels like a work in progress. I hope to see further improvements in future models.

Overall Assessment

Haute42’s ambitious model, packed with stroke adjustment and a wide range of features

The HautePad C-AT is an ambitious model that combines Haute42’s first 18-button split layout with 3-level stroke adjustment. Stroke adjustment is an uncommon feature in this price range, and the ability to fine-tune the button input feel to suit your play style is a major appeal.

The main buttons use Kailh Wind Engine switches, with a smooth key stroke provided by their full POM housing. With features such as an OLED screen, LED ring, magnetic top plate, and tournament lock, there are few models in this price range that pack in this many features.

There are areas that could be refined further, such as details of the split layout and the practicality of the Short setting. Even so, it deserves high marks for offering the innovative stroke adjustment feature and a generous set of features at an accessible price.

This is a recommended choice for anyone looking for a feature-rich split-layout leverless controller or wanting to pursue a control feel that is uniquely their own through stroke adjustment.
